How to prepare for the 18th Edition exam

The 18th Edition Exam is a two hour and 60 question exam, where you need to answer 80% of the questions correctly in order to be successful.

It is an open book exam, which means that during the exam you are allowed to take full advantage of the BS 7671 book.

You can prepare for the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations exam by a number of ways:

  1. You could go on a five day course
  2. You could buy an online course and study at your own pace
  3. Self learn with the help of the BS 7671 book and other online resources

Let’s examine these choices now in more detail.

The five day course option

This is the easiest option and the most expensive one as well.

You will get one on one tutoring from an experienced tutor who will guide you through the exam process and answer all your questions right there on the day. The downside of this option is that you will not only have to pay for the course, which is usually around £500-600, but you will also lose a week’s worth of earnings.

We only recommend this option if you really doubt in your abilities and you feel that you need the best help you can get.

The online course option

You can get the same course contents as what you would get on a five day course. It is a much cheaper option with courses going around for £100 or less. There some really cheap and bad ones out there, ones which you should avoid, so stick with the principle of you get what you pay for.

We recommend the one presented by Trevor Webb from LearnZone Media which costs £58.00 for the standard version. It is tried and tested by us and many other electricians who we know and they all had success with it. It also has excellent reviews that you can read on several websites and forums, including TrustPilot. The course is presented in a series of video presentations and comes with revision questions and an exam simulator which makes it excellent value for money.

You can find the course here: https://www.learnzonemedia.co.uk/p/18th-edition-online-course

The benefits of going with an online course, other than the price, is that you can study at your own pace so there is no pressure on you. If you feel reasonably confident in your studying abilities than we definitively recommend this option.

Study on your own option

This is the cheapest and hardest way of preparing for the 18th Edition exam.

However, it is perfectly doable since the exam is an open book exam. This means that all the answers are right there in front of you, all you have to do is to know how to find them.

If you are confident in your abilities then this is the best option for you since not only that you will save a lot of money, but you will probably learn the book more thoroughly than others attending the five day course. If you decide to go with this option feel free to read our guide for studying on your own for the 18th Edition exam.

Top tip!

No matter which option you go for, the five day course, online course or self study – you can massively improve your chances by practicing for the exam.

You can do this with the help of past exam questions and answers, mock exams, past exam papers or the best one – with the help of an 18th Edition Exam Simulator.

The more you practice the more you will get a feel for the exam and find your way around the book which is the key to being successful on this exam.
